Product overview

Merrell have delivered the MOAB 2 GORE-TEX  shoes in the shoe and mid-boot by utilising the outstanding technology of two companies: Vibram® who are famous for their rubber outer soles and Gore-tex® for their breathable, waterproof mesh uppers. By incorporating the outer sole and mesh upper with Merrells outstanding designs they have produced a durable and comfortable shoe for tough hiking trails and conditions.

Abbreviations:
MOAB : Mother of all Boots™
GTX : Gore-Tex
Do not mistake other Merrell Hiking Shoes – the label must contain MOAB 2 GTX for the shoe or Mid if you want the benefits of  Vibram®  and Gore-tex®

Benefits

Sole: High performance rubber, slip resistant, built for rough and tough terrain providing durability and stability, shock absorption , cushioning for comfort, protective cap around toes

Upper: Gore-tex breathable and waterproof allowing for air circulation while keeping water out. It is a comfortable mesh fabric which provides flexibility. Synthetic or suede leather depending on style chosen.

Inner and Mid sole: contouring around arch for support, stability, comfort, shock absorption,
There is odour control included with Merrells M Fresh technology causing odour causing bacteria to break down on contact.

Comfort in this shoe is due to all of the above features – the shoe fits comfortably without any tight spots or loose areas when sized correctly. Labelled as out-of-the-box shoe means they do not need to be worn in – they are ready to go!

The toe is reinforced – this extends the life of the shoe, especially in rugged terrain when the front is often damaged before the rest of the shoe.

Cost versus Benefits

The value for money comes from choosing a shoe that is going to last, withstanding some heavy-duty hiking or enjoying the comfort of an out-of-the-box shoe that fits comfortably from day one. Looking at the things that wear out most on hiking shoes: the sole, the front of the shoe, the sides take a beating, the inside becomes damp, smelly and mouldy – all of these things are addressed with the MOAB 2 GTX.

The benefits to the person wearing them: comfortable fitting and dry feet are less likely to get blisters, the shock absorption and air cushioned sole is going to be less impacting on the feet, knees, legs and subsequently the back.

Merrell back their workmanship and also satisfaction for their customers. See guarantee/warranty section below.

Care Plan

Cleaning:  keep shoes clean by removing any dirt with a soft brush and if extremely dirty use warm soapy water then rinse off soap
Drying: undo laces, remove insoles and open shoe out to air and dry – do not expose to heat
Waterproofing: Use waterproofing spray after you have hiked your boots for a while which may affect the natural waterproofing through hiking wear and tear.

  1. Truth to be told, I haven’t been hiking since I don’t even remember when.
However, from the last time I did, I still remember how important the shoes actually are!
I don’t know which pair to choose from the ones you presented here, they all look like an excellent choice for hiking.
I’ll bookmark your page just to have useful information where hiking shoes are being concerned.
    Thanks for sharing!

  2. Theres nothing worse than wearing a pair of hiking boots that just don’t do the job. I am currently looking for a new pair and these Merrell Moab 2 GTX look like a great choice, thanks for the in-depth review 🙂

  3. This post came at a good time for me as I am looking for my next pair of hiking shoes. Great information, and I appreciate the in-depth review.
I’m very hard on shoes and boots and I’m always short of money. I have found over the years that buying a good quality hiking shoe or boot is wise. It may cost a bit more, but in the long run you save because the books last longer and are more comfortable. Merrell just moved to the top of my list.
    Thanks for this review!

    1. Thankyou Keith – I too have found out from experience after buying hiking shoes and boots that weren’t waterproof when they claimed to be and the soles giving out long before the rest of the shoe.
